![]() ![]() While this change, along with Zombie's change of appearance (he lost the dreadlocks and went back to his natural hair color, blonde), upset many of his fans, it allowed Rob to experiment with his style without deviating from his core fan base. The album was a more stripped down, raw rock record, and quite a departure from the techno-industrial feel of the old Zombie albums. In March 2006, he released his newest album, entitled "Educated Horses". Also in his films is his wife Sheri Moon Zombie. It was received much better than the first film, even getting the 'thumbs up' from well-known film critic Roger Ebert. Its sequel, 'The Devil's Rejects,' was released in 2005. In 2003 he made his directorial debut with the release of the film 'House of 1000 Corpses' to a lukewarm reception, though it garnered quite a cult-following. Remixes of some of its tracks were released on 1999's American Made Music To Strip By, followed up by the studio release The Sinister Urge in 2001. He was the former lead singer for the rock/metal group White Zombie, and later became a successful solo artist, disbanding the group after his first solo album, the 1998 release Hellbilly Deluxe, sold more in the first week than any of the band's albums ever did. However, "nice" should never be a word that can describe a Rob Zombie record.Rob Zombie was born as Robert Cummings in Haverhill, Massachusetts on January 12, 1965. JOHN 5 does his best to disguise lifeless riffs with some stylish playing and a killer tone, resulting in some nice mainstream metal. "Sick Bubblegum" is catchier than any song with a "Rock, motherfucker" rejoinder deserves to be, and "What?" may be the best GIBBY HAYNES impression since 1996, right down to lyrics that sound made up on the spot. Even when he isn't sounding awkwardly experimental, songs like "Mars Needs Women" and "Burn" are worthy of Rob's mediocre kid brother's band, but not the guy who gave us Astro-Creep 2000. "Werewolf Women of the SS" is an undeserving musical counterpart to Rob's inspiring Grindhouse trailer. The artsy detours and sound clips on "Jesus Frankenstein" and particularly the interminable "The Man Who Laughs" distract from otherwise fine songs. He's maintained the bells and whistles that made WHITE ZOMBIE stand out, but he no longer has the hooks to carry them. Sheri Moon Zombie sounds like an artist who should be on Roadrunner pitching himself to The End Records. ![]()
